Types of electric power wheelchairs to choose from

Motorized power wheelchairs are usually made with one of three different drive wheel systems. Each type is operated by a joystick. 

1. Rear-wheel drive (RWD)
2. Mid-wheel drive (MWD)
3. Front-wheel drive (FWD)

Mid-wheel, or center-drive power wheelchairs provide a tight turning radius for optimum accessibility and maneuverability indoors, and the performance of six wheels on the ground which allows for a smoother ride outdoors.

On the other hand, some users are more comfortable using a rear wheel or front wheel drive power wheelchair for their stability outdoors, especially at higher speeds.

How much do electric power wheelchairs weigh? 

Most people who ask this question are wondering if they can pick it up and carry it or put it in a van. So we'll answer that question assuming you want a lightweight wheelchair. For this, none competes with Golden's new Cricket power wheelchair. It weighs in at only 33 pounds! Compare that to Golden's Compass power wheelchair at 179 pounds! 

Is a power wheelchair covered by Medicare?

Medicare Part B may cover electric power wheelchairs as durable medical equipment (DME) if the doctor treating your condition submits a written order stating that you have a medical need for a wheelchair for use in your home. What is the difference between electric and power wheelchairs? 

Usually nothing, at least here. We use both words to define the wheelchairs we carry. They are both electric (battery) powered and they are power chairs in that each one is more than a simple mobility chair that can get you around inside your home. They give you the "power" to enjoy the outdoors because you can drive them outside, across lawns, dirt, sidewalks, and more. And some also have the power to navigate different types or rougher terrains.

What features should I look for if I want to be able to transport the chair in a car?

Three things are important for portability:

1. Weight (see question 1 above)
2. Folding frame
3. Size (when it's folded will it fit?)
4. Disassembly (can it be disassembled and then how hard is it to assemble back together?)

Are there any disadvantages to having an electric power wheelchair?

We believe the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, but here are a couple that come to mind: 

1. Portability - Most don't fold so moving them from one place to another can be difficult.
2. Batteries need to be recharged - But they run for many miles, from about 6-24 miles on a single charge depending on the chair, so this is not typically a problem as most don't go those long distances.
3. They are pricier than traditional wheelchairs.

The advantage, of course, is that the patient benefits from a more independent lifestyle. That is worth its weight in gold!
