How do you know which shower chair to get?
1. Choose based on your environment
- If you have a walk-in shower
Use a stool or a shower chair. If others use the shower, choose one that is light and can easily be removed. Shower chair with wheels are perfect for roll-in showers and for toileting. - If you have a bathtub
Use a stool, shower chair, or transfer bench. Measure the inside width of the tub. Make sure the outside width dimensions of the legs fit inside. For a transfer bench, make sure the height of the bench will actually slide over the top of the tub.
2. Choose based on mobility and support
- A stool provides the least amount of support. Make sure you are mobile and can support yourself well sitting down if you want to use a stool.
- A shower chair with a backrest is for those with moderate balance and mobility. This is good for those recovering post surgery. it is a low-risk fall solution.
- A transfer bench is for those with a high-risk fall condition and with restricted mobility and balance. See our sliding shower chairs and non-sliding shower transfer benches if you cannot step into the tub or shower yourself.
- Tilt & recline shower chairs have backs and seats that tilt together to provide more support for those with weaker legs and/or weaker upper body. These tilt and recline shower chairs allow patients to sit safely in a tilted position, allowing them to feel more secure about their body position and safety.
3. Choose based on weight capacity
4. Choose a standard or specialty model
Shower chairs with a rotating, such as a rotating seat, or sliding feature, such as a transfer bench, make for easier transfer and reduce friction and shearing injuries.
Helpful Hints
- Adjust the height so your feet are flat on the floor.
- Make sure all legs are the same height.
- With a transfer bench make sure you are aware of the height of the tub and the seat and adjust accordingly.
Additional features to choose from
- Drainage holes in the seat
- Contoured seats
- Padded seats and backrests
- Armrests
Safety considerations
- Make sure the leg extensions are securely locked in place
- Be sure all leg extensions are touching the floor

- Shower sprays
- Tub rails
- Bellevita bath lift allows the user to sit all the way down in the tub and recline
Frequently Asked Questions About Shower Chairs
What's the difference between a shower chair and a transfer bench?
Transfer benches were designed for those who cannot step into the tub or shower. They straddle the tub wall and provide a place to sit outside the tub area. From there, the user either pushes themself across the bench into the tub area, or if it's a sliding shower chair, just slides in on the chair. Shower chairs, on the other hand, allow you to stay seated while bathing but they cannot help you get in and out of the tub. What features are important when choosing a shower chair?
Stability and comfort are important, as is height. So you'll want to choose a shower chair that is height-adjustable. We also like shower chairs with perforated seats to allow the water to drain through and prevent slippage, as well as a seat opening for washing. Arms are optional, but if you get one with removable arms, you get the best of both worlds. You can find shower chairs with all these features in our store.Does Medicare cover the cost of shower chairs?
To quote the Medicare website regarding shower chairs (link opens in a new window), "Medicare Part B defines Durable Medical Equipment as devices or items that must be used to meet a specific medical necessity. Therefore, shower chairs are not generally covered. However, certain Medicare Advantage plans may cover a shower chair. Check with your individual plan to find out. We're here in live chat to answer questions.
